Summer Institute

The CCJA Summer Institute offers seven (7) different one-week intensives in various styles and topics! Each Summer Institute program tuition is $155. See below for specific information.

  • 1. JAZZ COMPOSITION: The Music of Wayne Shorter & Thelonius Monk, led by pianist-composer Eric Gunnison
    Dive into the music of legendary composers, write your own
    compositions based on their style, and hear it recorded!

  • 2. FUNK ENSEMBLE led by drummer Mike Marlier
    An exciting high-energy experience of the ins and outs of funk!

    • Dates: June 19-22 (1-3pm). Concert on Saturday 6/24 at 1pm
    • Location: University of Denver, Newman Center
    • Open to ages 11-18.

  • 3. FUSION ENSEMBLE led by pianist-composer Jeff Jenkins
           A week-long adventure into FUSION – a genre that emerged in
    the late 1960’s alongside the advent of electronic insruments
    that combined aspects of jazz harmony with funk, rock, r&b.

    • Dates: June 19-22 (1-3pm). Concert on Saturday 6/24 at 1pm
    • Location: University of Colorado-Boulder, Macky Auditorium
    • Open to ages 11-18.

  • 4. JAZZ ARTS VOICES led by the Sharp Five vocal group
    Spend each day immersed in group rehearsals, and a vocal jazz
    related masterclass topic, culminating in a performance.

  • 5. LATIN ENSEMBLE led by saxophonist-percussionist Eric Trujillo
    Dive into the world of Latin music and learn about all the various sub-genres and styles involved!

    • Dates: June 26-June 30 (4-6pm). Concert on Saturday, July 1 at 12pm
    • Location: Mi Vida Strings (3702 W. 72nd Ave, Westminster)
    • Open to ages 11-18.

  • 6. ODD METER ENSEMBLE led by guitarist Dave Devine
    This week-long experience of playing in odd meters ( 5, 7, 11, etc!) is sure to challenge and inspire the advanced high school jazz musician and take his or her playing to the next level!

  • 7. MUSIC BEYOND THE STAGE led by trombonist-composer Zack Demos
    Find out more about being a professional musician, and explore
    music related careers beyond the stage. Look at music from a business perspective, and open your mind to the possibilities!

    • Dates: June 12-15 (1-3pm), will attend a recording session on 6/16 from 12-2pm.
    • Location: Various. Students will take mini “field trips” to music industry locations around Denver such as Dazzle Restaurant & Lounge, Jazz 89.3 KUVO, and Mighty Fine Productions
    • Open to high school musicians.
